Mental Health Awareness Should Be Given Much Attention – Singer, Offei Appeals

Fast rising Ghanaian music star, Offei has appealed to the authority to make mental health a priority in the country.

Being in the medical industry himself, Offei thinks that mental health deserves much more attention than what it’s been given currently.

The “Fimano” singer becomes the latest prominent person to make an appeal to the powers that be to make mental health a priority in the country.

He made this appeal on his official Twitter handle. His tweet reads: “MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS SHOULD BE GIVEN MORE HYPE . FOR REAL ITS A REALLY SERIOUS ISSUE. WE NEED TO EDUCATE OURSELVES ON IT , SO WE CAN HELP THE NEXT BROTHER OR SISTER . EVEN OURSELVES.”

The streets of Ghana have been taken over by mentally challenged people who are roaming about and causing damages to people and their properties.

The country currently can boast of only two functional mental health facilities. They’re the the Pantang and Ankaful Psychiatric hospitals in Greater Accra and Central regions respectively.

These two main mental health facilities have been facing challenges including inadequate staff, congested wards and most recently encroachment on their lands by private developers.

There is no single mental health hospital in the entire middle and northern belts of the country. Despite the cry of the citizens to get this anomaly fixed, little attention has been given this sensitive topic.

A lot of people are battling one mental health condition or the other and there’s no place for them to take refuge in order to get medical treatment.

Celebrities such as Funny Face, Okomfo Kwadae among others have suffered mental illness in their lives before. Abena Korkor is making all the negative headlines on social media due to a mental health problem called bipolar that she’s going through.
